What is the VIE?
The International Corporate Volunteer Program (VIE – Volontariat International en Entreprise) is a French public program that allows young people aged 18 to 28 to carry out a professional assignment abroad within a French company or a partner organization. The program is managed and administered end-to-end by Business France, the agency operating under the supervision of the French Ministry of the Economy.
A VIE is neither a traditional employment contract nor an internship. It is a distinct status that provides full social protection, a tax-free monthly allowance, and a secure administrative framework. In practice, you work on a real assignment with genuine responsibilities, without the constraints associated with expatriate employment.

Who Can Apply?
The VIE is open to young people aged 18 to 28 who are French nationals or citizens of a European Union member state. No specific degree is required. The assignment must begin before the applicant turns 29.
Eligibility requirements:
- Be a French national or a citizen of a country within the European Economic Area (EEA)
- Be between 18 and 28 years old at the time of application
- Have completed the French Defense and Citizenship Day (for French nationals)
- Have a clean criminal record
- Be fully available for the assignment, with no parallel professional activity
Important note for dual nationals: If you hold both French nationality and an African nationality, you are fully eligible. Eligibility is based on your EU passport, and dual nationality does not create any restrictions.
How Do You Apply?
Going through Business France is mandatory. It grants volunteer status, pays the allowances, and manages social protection. There are two main ways to find a mission.
Through Civiweb, the Official Platform
- Create your profile, verify your eligibility, and access available opportunities.
- Around 70% of VIE offers are published there.

Through Direct Applications
- Approximately one-quarter of VIE contracts result from direct applications.
- Many large companies recruit VIE candidates without publishing job advertisements.

- A typical Civiweb offer may receive around 100 applications, making direct outreach a way to reduce competition significantly.
How Much Does It Pay?
VIE participants do not receive a salary in the traditional sense but rather a fixed monthly allowance, exempt from income tax in France.
The allowance consists of two components:
- Common allowance: €772.87 per month for all volunteers, regardless of destination.
- Geographical allowance: Varies depending on the country, city, and local cost of living.

- The allowance is exempt from French income tax and social contributions.
- If the company provides accommodation, up to 20% of the geographical allowance may be deducted.

Assignment Duration and Selection Process
Assignments last between 6 and 24 months. They may be extended once, provided the total duration does not exceed 24 months. A VIE can only be undertaken once in a lifetime.
The average assignment lasts approximately 18 months.
The recruitment process is handled entirely by the company, not by Business France. Applicants should generally expect a timeline of two to five months between initial contact and the start of the assignment.
Typical process:
Step 1: Registration and eligibility validation on Civiweb (a few days to two weeks)
Step 2: Company selection process, including HR and operational interviews (two to six weeks depending on the organization)
Step 3: Administrative validation by Business France (four to eight weeks before the start date)
Candidates who successfully secure a VIE often report spending three to six months actively searching before receiving an offer. The key is to target specific companies and avoid relying solely on published vacancies.

Belgium, Canada, and Switzerland: Are There Equivalent Programs?
